Good morning and happy Friday to you! Today I have a completely new colorway to show you, and I’d like to get your opinion about a few new yarn base possibilities.
Sunrise, Sunset
This week, I created a new colorway. If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you may have already seen the colorway as well as the dilemma I had naming it. I was originally planning to dye up a sunset colorway, but I thought it looked a little more like a sunrise when I was done. I asked folks on Instagram and Facebook, and it was almost even with just a few more votes for sunrise than sunset. The votes really seemed to depend on where everyone lived. Isn’t it amazing how different these beautiful daily events can be depending on where you live?
In the end, I decided to acknowledge both and add another dimension to the name after my friend and customer Rachel made the suggestion. I named it Sunrise, Sunset after the beautiful song from one of my favorite musicals, Fiddler on the Roof. The father and mother sing the song during the wedding of their eldest daughter, wondering where the years have gone. I’ve certainly been there, and I bet many of you have as well. Here is the song from the 1971 film adaptation of the musical:
Here is a photo of Sunrise, Sunset on all the sock-weight yarn bases:
I also dyed it on Super Sport, Squoosh DK, and Buttery Soft DK. I made a sample hat in stockinette using Buttery Soft DK so you can get an idea of how it will work up:
Here’s a closeup of the (unblocked) hat:
Sunrise, Sunset would go well with Burgundy Rose and Sunflower.
This week I also dyed up Paris on several yarn bases, including this one–Stained Glass Sock:
I dyed up Freedom Blue as well. Here it is on Sock Perfection:
I originally dyed Freedom Blue to go with Sunflower for Ukraine, but it also makes a great colorway for our freedom-loving nation this Memorial Day.
New Yarn Base Possibilities
I have three luxurious yarn bases that I’m considering, and I’d like to get your input. The first two are textured yarns, and the last one is smooth as, well, smooth as silk.
- The first is Alpaca Lace Cloud. I’ve carried this before, and I’m thinking of bringing it back. It has all the wonderful texture of brushed mohair with none of the itch since it’s made of silk and baby alpaca. The mill has adjusted the base a bit so it now has a little more silk, and the yardage is the same as most of their sock-weight yarn bases. This one would be around $26 per skein.
- The second is a sock-weight bouclé yarn made of silk and merino. I would need to charge almost $40 per skein to make it work. If you aren’t familiar with bouclé, it has little loops all the way along, making a wonderful fun texture.
- The third and final option is a yarn base made of 100% silk. It’s great for warp and for those who are allergic to wool as well as anyone who just loves the cool softness of silk. This one would need to be at or a little above $40 per skein to make the numbers work.
Here they all are dyed up:
Would you be interested in any of these? I would be very grateful if you would fill out this very brief survey to let me know. If you can’t see the survey or have more to add, please email me your thoughts.
I hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. I’m so grateful to all the men and women who gave their lives for freedom and justice. See you next week.
