Rippling Wings Shawl Pattern

I have a new shawl pattern to share with you this week! The knits and purls work together to create a fascinating ripple effect, and the triangular shape reminds me of birds’ wings. After going back and forth a bit and getting some help from some of you on Instagram and Facebook, I named it the Rippling Wings Shawl.

I made the first one using just a single skein of Squoosh Worsted in the colorway Les Vendeuses de Tissue by Lois Jones–one of my art-inspired colorways. Here that is:

While the front and back are a little different, they both look great, and the finished project is completely reversible. The pattern also includes the option of marled knitting as well.

It is knit from side to side starting with just a few stitches and increasing along one edge until you have used almost half the yarn. Then you begin decreasing all the way to the final point.

The pattern itself is simple enough for a beginner, but it can also be a great on-the-go project for a more advanced knitter. This shawl pattern is all about options. You can use one skein to make a scarf, two skeins for a small shawl, three skeins for a medium-sized shawl, or four or five skeins to make a cozy shawl large enough to wrap up in. You can make it in any weight of yarn or combination of weights.

I went on to make a second one using two skeins of Twinkle Sock in another art-inspired colorway–Blue and Green Music by Georgia O’Keeffe. Here that is:

While you can certainly use a semi-solid or tonal colorway for this, I think the pattern looks best with a Splashed and Speckled colorway–the type of variegated colorway with random color placement that isn’t likely to pool.

Since you can make this with any weight of yarn, I included a chart with suggested needle sizes for everything from lace weight through bulky. I also included instructions for making a marled version and even using the pattern for an Advent calendar without spoiling the surprise.

You can get the pattern on Ravelry right here or on my website here.

Fresh from the Dye Pots

This week I have been alternating between dyeing up the Advent colorways and dyeing up dyed to order colorways. The Advent colorways are coming along nicely. I have now dyed eight out of the twenty-four mini skein colorways.

I’m still getting used to the process of doing a lot more dyed to order colorways, but often when someone orders one skein, I go ahead and dye up the same colorway on several different yarn bases. This week, I have dyed Epiphany on several yarn bases. Here it is on Stained Glass Sock:

Epiphany looks great with Eggplant, Annunciation Blue, and Monet to name a few.

I also dyed more Farewell to Anger and Ocean at Night. You can see all three in the New Yarn and Fiber section of my shop right here.

World Central Kitchen

I mentioned last week that I’d be donating 20% of all sales this week to World Central Kitchen so that together we could help those affected by the recent hurricanes. You all stepped up in a big way, and together we were able to send them a donation of $400 today. That’s a lot of meals! Thank you so much!

November Club Colorway

This month, I chose La Sainte Chapelle in Paris as inspiration for the November club colorway. It was built in an astonishingly brief period of 6 years beginning in 1242.

I got to visit La Sainte Chapelle a little over 30 years ago now, and it is amazing! I think that rather than focusing on a single one of those 50-foot tall windows, I’ll focus on the sense of the whole mostly because that is how I remember it.

I remember the sensations of awe and wonder when I got up to this beautiful chapel, surrounded by light from all the beautiful stained glass windows. It was like walking into a jewelry box! Here is a broad view that includes the beautiful ceiling:

Here it is again, focused on the apse:

I can hardly wait to begin!

I hope you have a wonderful weekend. See you next Friday.
