One Plus One – Two Skein Sets with Sparkle

Happy Friday!

In the last week, several big projects have come to a close. The biggest one is Spin Together, which we started organizing for 2020 back in March! The next biggest one is the Yarn Advent Calendars, which are all packaged up and waiting to go out. I’m grateful to two of my sons who helped a lot over the last few days with packaging.

I was originally planning to mail them out on November 20th, but given mail delays due to COVID, I’m thinking of sending them a bit sooner.

One Plus One: Two-Skein Yarn Sets

Last week I showed you a number of yarn pairings on Sock Perfection and some patterns to go with them.

This week I have more to show you on Sparkly Merino Sock. In most cases, these colorway pairs include a semi-solid plus a variegated skein, but there are some really intriguing exceptions.

Two-Skein Pattern Possibilities

Let’s start with the patterns this time around. This is the same list from last week, but I’m including the links again in case you didn’t happen to see it.

These all call for two distinctly different colorways, and most just require two skeins. They range from beginner to rather complex.

Here they are:

Yarn Pairings

Here are some great “yarn pairings” that I dyed on Sparkly Merino Sock. You can find all of these in the Sparkly Merino Sock section of my shop.

These are all in stock right now, but if something sells out, you can order most of these colorways from the Dyed to Order section of my shop. The timeline says to allow 2-3 weeks, but normally it is less than that.

Here we go.

This first pairing is Arwen and Call Me Ishmael. Arwen is on the edge between a tonal colorway and a variegated colorway.

This is an interesting new combination. I have often paired Purple Iris with Eggplant, but pairing it with Aubergine is new. As you can see, the color where the green and the purple meet up matches Aubergine really well.

This next pairing is one of my favorites. This is one of the exceptions to the rule of a semi-solid paired with a variegated. Instead, I have paired Beautiful Universe with Black Butterfly, which is one of my Ikat colorways. I think these will be quite stunning together!

Next up are Burgundy Rose with Arizona Sunset. It may surprise you, but Burgundy Rose is actually one of the dyes used in making Arizona Sunset, so they are a match made in Heaven.

If you want a little more drama, you can switch out Arizona Sunset for Wild Rose as a pairing for Burgundy Rose. In fact, all three would be fabulous together.

Next up is another new combo. I paired Copper Roof with Cinnamon, which is a new colorway that I worked up in the last couple of weeks.

Another colorway that would go beautifully with Copper Roof is Turquoise, but I didn’t photograph those two together this time.

This next One-Plus-One combo shows Eggplant and Durin’s Bane. I should mention that this is the last skein of Durin’s Bane for now anyway. Durin’s Bane would also look wonderful with The Winedark Sea.

This next pairing is one I have shown a few times because I love it so much. It’s Enchanted Forest with Annunciation Blue.

If you would like to emphasize the warm, rich earth tones in Enchanted Forest, you can pair it with Chocolate. Everything is better with chocolate after all, right?

This next yarn pairing may not be an obvious combo, but the deep navy and gold of Eowyn’s Mantle are in The Hands of the King too. The fact that both were inspired by the same section of The Return of the King certainly helps.

Here’s another great pairing with Eowyn’s Mantle. This time it is paired with Epiphany. I’m not sure this combo would always work, but it works beautiful with this particular batch of Epiphany due to how the colors combined.

Here’s another color combo using Epiphany and the final skein of No Shrinking Violet, which really lives up to its name. It’s on the edge between pink and purple, and it is a wonderfully intense color.

This next one is Galadriel’s Gift along with Dreams of the Sea. I’m sort of surprised I never thought to put these two together before. I may have to find a project of my own with these two!

Here’s another possibility with No Shrinking Violet. It’s Complicated has speckles this exact colorway in it, making this a super fun combo.

I should also mention that It’s Complicated looks great with both Complications (dark gray with speckles) and Party Like It’s 2021 (white with speckles). All three have all of the same speckles. The others are sold out at the moment, but you can get them through the Dyed to Order section of my shop.

This next combo shows La Bohème and Eggplant.

This next combo is another favorite of mine. It’s Monet’s Water Lilies with Arwen.

If you are looking for something that is peaceful and elegant, look no further than Seashell and North Wind. I think these colorways will be great year around.

The last color combo I have for you today is Turquoise and Dreams of the Sea. On my monitor at least, Turquoise looks a little greener than it is in reality. It’s right at the intersection between blue and green in reality and a perfect match for Dreams of the Sea.

That’s all of the color combos I have for you today. Sometime in the next few weeks, I’ll share some pattern links for heavier weights of yarn and some yarn combos to go with them.

If you have some suggestions for DK, worsted-weight, and bulky-weight patterns made for one semi-solid and one variegated skein, I would love to hear them. I found a couple for each but not nearly so many as for sock-weight yarn.

I hope you have a wonderful week and find some time to enjoy the fiber arts!
