This week I have been dyeing autumn colorways like mad. Some are old, some are new, and some are variations on a theme. I’d like to show you the colorways individually, and then I’ll show you some sets you can put together with them.
The first colorway is a new one called Pumpkin Spice, which is a semi-solid colorway with a little bit of tonal variation. Here it is on Stained Glass Sock:
The next colorway is Pumpkin Spice Latte because what else are you going to do with that pumpkin spice? This one is an assigned pooling colorway. Here it is on Stained Glass Sock as well:
Next up is Copper Roof, which is also an assigned pooling colorway. Here it is on Twinkle Sock for the first time:
Next is Autumn Leaves, which is a block variegated colorway. That means I dyed it in sections or blocks of color. Here it is on Buttery Soft DK:
I also dyed The Palantir. That’s a colorway from my Lord of the Rings collection that’s perfect for autumn. It’s a Splashed and Speckled colorway. Here it is on Sock Perfection:
The last colorway I dyed this week was The Winedark Sea which was inspired by Homer’s Odyssey. Here it is on Twinkle Sock:
The Winedark Sea is a deep red with purple undertones. Think of cranberries or Merlot.
I have one more colorway to add to this collection, and that’s Afremov’s Farewell to Anger, which I dyed a couple weeks back. It has a distinct fall vibe even though it doesn’t scream autumn. It’s a splashed and speckled colorway. Here that is on Dream Sock:
I just love all these warm colors that go so beautifully with the cooler weather!

What Goes with What
Of course each of these colorways works well on its own, but many of them look great together too. I photographed a few of my favorite combinations so you can see them side by side.
This is The Winedark Sea and Autumn Leaves shown on Buttery Soft DK:
…and here is The Winedark Sea with Afremov’s Farewell to Anger on Twinkle Sock:
Either of these last two would work beautifully for any two-color shawlette. Need help choosing a pattern? Here’s a previous blog post I did with some pattern ideas for two sock-weight colorways together.
Here’s a set of three that would look great with Joji Locatelli’s Odyssey Shawl or any number of other three-color shawls. This is Pumpkin Spice Latte, Pumpkin Spice, and The Palantir on Squoosh DK:
This next combination would be great to use for an assigned pooling pattern like Knitting by the Pool Ponchette or the Metamorphosis Shawl. You’d need one of each colorway for the Knitting by the Pool Ponchette and two of each for the Metamorphosis Shawl. The colorways are Pumpkin Spice Latte and The Palantir on Stained Glass Sock:
You could also do the same two patterns with Copper Roof and Pumpkin Spice.
This last colorway combination is one I think I’m going to be using myself for a fall-colored Angel Wings Ponchette. The three colorways are Pumpkin Spice Latte, The Palantir, and The Winedark Sea. I dyed them all on Dream Sock, which really is as soft as a kitten. I can’t wait!

Introducing Elizabeth
My daughter Elizabeth is going to be helping out as my social media manager starting this week. I’m really grateful to her for her help, and I know she’ll do a great job. I’ll keep doing the newsletter, but you’ll be seeing a lot of her on Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest. She knits, spins, sews, and does bead weaving as well. She and her husband live down in San Antonio. Here she is with our darling grandson, Eddie:
October Club Colorway
This month I chose a painting/diagram by Saint Hildegard von Bingen. She was a Benedictine nun who lived in the 1100s. She was an amazing writer, philosopher, scientist, mathematician, musician, and artist. Did I miss anything? I would call her a Renaissance woman except she predates the Renaissance!
This is a diagram she made called The Cycle of the Seasons:
I don’t have the exact date this was made, but she lived from 1098 to 1179.
Many thanks to everyone who ordered an Advent calendar. The rest of the yarn is on its way to me now, and I have all the fiber ready to go. I can’t wait to start working on them!
Have a wonderful week and a happy autumn!
