Good morning and happy Friday to you! This week, I want to tell you about this year’s Fiber Advent Calendar and also show you some yarn pairings and patterns for using Suri Lace Cloud and Squiggle Sock together for some amazing, soft texture.
Around the Color Wheel Spinner’s Advent Calendar
The yarn Advent calendars you have heard so much about are on their way. Woohoo! That means I have just enough time to offer a spinner’s Advent calendar this year! I was hoping to be able to do this, but I didn’t want to mention it until I was sure I would have the time. The theme is “Around the Color Wheel.”
The kit includes 24 boxes of soft fiber. Each day, you will get to open a box with half an ounce of soft merino, silky bamboo, or baby alpaca. The colors will be a soft gradient, made to blend from one to the next. I’m also including some extra luxurious fibers that you can add in whenever you like.
I have a fairly small quantity of these available, and I’ll be shipping them by November 15th, so you’ll want to order fairly soon. You can find the Fiber Advent Calendars and learn more right here.
Suri Lace Cloud + Squiggle Sock
What could be better than the texture of soft cloud-like Suri Lace Cloud unless it is the fun texture of Squiggle Sock? This week, I put together some of each to show you, and I gathered together some knitting patterns that use both together. I’ll show you the yarn first and then the patterns.
I twisted a skein of Suri Lace Cloud and a skein of the same colorway of Squiggle Sock together so you can see how they look together.
However, I decided to keep the listings separate so you have the option of combining different colorways if that is your preference. Below you can see what’s what.
You can find all the pairings shown above in a special collection called Suri + Squiggle, and if you want to combine different colorways than the ones I put together, you can find all the Suri Lace Cloud here and all the Squiggle Sock here.
Patterns to Go with Suri + Squiggle
I found some lovely patterns that were designed just for this combination. The links lead to Ravelry, but if you shop for patterns elsewhere, you should be able to find some of these there as well. Here they are:
- Mo’ Slub Knit Club by Melissa Kemmerer – Rather than using the two different yarn bases together, this pattern alternates them, making a lovely triangular shawl.
- Tassels in the Sky by Vincent Villapando – This free pattern uses both yarn bases together and includes explicit instructions for making the tassels too.
- Sprinkled with Kindness by Cally Monster – This intriguing shawl pattern uses the two bases separately and has some more complex stitch combinations.
- For the Frill of It by Chic and Regal – This lovely lacy cowl uses both bases together.
- Slub and Fuzz by Skeinanigans – This beanie uses both bases together.
- Birds of a Feather by Andrea Mowry – This lovely shawl pattern was not made with Slub or Squiggle yarn in mind, but I think it would look great with it, using the Suri Lace Cloud instead of mohair and the Squiggle Sock in place of the smooth yarn base.
- Cooma Cowl by Laura Dobratz – Like Birds of a Feather, this yarn was made for mohair plus a smooth yarn, but I think it would look great with Squiggle Sock too.
If you want to search for more patterns along these lines, try looking for “Slub” and filtering by two yarns held together. Alternatively, look for patterns with any lace-weight yarn and any sock-weight yarn held together. I’d recommend simple patterns because the texture makes a great focal point, and lace would be lost in it.
Fresh from the Dyepot
As I mentioned, I got all the Advent calendars packaged up over the course of last week and mailed them all on Monday. After that I took a day off and then started to get back to “ordinary time” in my studio. I dyed Ocean at Night on a number of different yarn bases. Here it is on Stained Glass Sock:
I also dyed Enchanted Forest on lots of yarn bases, and I’m especially happy with this latest batch. Here it is on Squoosh Worsted:
I think that’s everything. Have a great week. Stay safe and warm. I hope you find time to work on something that brings you peace and joy! See you next Friday.
